Discovering Valvasone…
Our journey discovering Valvasone starts in Castello Square, a place protected by the walls and the fosse, on which the first village rose.
On the west side we can see the Tower of the Hours, or Tower of St. Anthony Abbey, which was the only entrance to the village.
The square is towered above by the impressive Castle of Lupo, and it’s surrounded by the arcades of the buildings dating back both to the Middle Ages and to following epochs. An example of this urban development is the seventeenth-century well.
Moving along Erasmo Street we reach Libertà Square and the St. Christ’s Holy Body Church. On the inside we find the only Venetian organ of the sixteenth century still working in Italy. The doors of its casing are as important as the organ because they’re painted by Pordenone and completed after his death by Pomponio Amalteo.
Kept in the tabernacle of the High Altar we can see the “Sacra Tovaglia”, the relict of the miracle occurred in 1294 in Gruaro (a village not too far from Valvasone).
Near the Church is the old St. James Chapel, now base of the Pro Loco of Valvasone and Tourist Office.
Libertà Square is characterised by the buildings with arcades supporting on the second circle of walls. The latter was closed by a tower which was demolished at the end of the sixteenth century to join Libertà Square to Mercato Square. In this last square we find the elegant Town Hall.
Proceeding in San Pietro Street we can admire St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Anthony Abbot Church, that once was the hospital of St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Anthony Abbey.
Nearby is the old Serviti Monastery and the old Dominican Monastery.
Our tour around alleys and small squares ends here but if you want to rest a little bit, the perfect place is Pinni Park, near the Tower of the Hours.
